Every big idea starts with a conversation. YourMedMom was no different. What began as a few women in medicine sharing stories, frustrations, and encouragement has grown into a community dedicated to supporting and empowering the next generation of women in medicine and surgery.
The Spark
The seed for YourMedMom was planted in the summer of 2024. That was when Aghdas began her role as Dr. Sabesan’s research fellow, and Elizabeth joined them in Florida as both an Nth Dimensions Summer Internship Scholar and an American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Scholar. Together, Aghdas, Elizabeth, and Dr. Sabesan saw an opportunity in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons IDEA Grant. As avid fans of podcasts and forums, they envisioned creating something that filled a critical gap—a space that didn’t yet exist for women in orthopaedics. In a field where women remain so underrepresented, they knew they weren’t the only ones searching for real talk, real support, and real mentorship.
“As a DO student without a home orthopedic program, I often felt like I was walking this path alone. I kept thinking—if I feel this way, how many other women must feel the same? That’s when I knew we needed a space where women could be real with each other, share support, and build something lasting.”
– Elizabeth Chan
As the idea took shape, it became clear this wasn’t going to be a solo effort—it was a community effort.
- Roya and Lana, undergraduate students on Dr. Sabesan’s research team, also stepped up early on. They brought fresh energy, creativity, and dedication to the project, helping take YourMedMom from an idea into something real and growing. Their behind-the-scenes contributions as our Marketing and Content Directors—whether in research, brainstorming, or keeping momentum—were a turning point in our growth.
- Jocelyn, who joined us as Dr. Sabesan’s 2025 research fellow, quickly became an essential part of the team. With her drive, organizational skills, and heart for building community, she stepped into the role of Operations Director, helping transform our vision into something structured and sustainable.

Why “YourMedMom”?
The name says it all. YourMedMom isn’t only about maternity—it’s about having your back. We’ve been through med school, residency, the operating room, taking call, balancing family, and fighting for our place in spaces that weren’t always built for us. We wanted to create something that would feel like having a mom in medicine: someone who’s walked the path before you, who’s rooting for you, and who will tell you the truth when you need it.
Where We’re Headed
YourMedMom is still growing, but the heart of it will always stay the same: women supporting women in medicine and surgery. We’re here to share experiences, answer questions, celebrate wins, and face challenges together. Because none of us should have to do this alone.
This is how we started—and we can’t wait to see where this community goes with all of you.
