The idea for YourMedMom began in the summer of 2024, during a pivotal moment when our founders were brought together from different parts of the United States as an orthopaedic surgeon, a research fellow, and a medical student on a summer internship. That convergence created space for reflection, conversation, and the recognition of a shared gap within the orthopaedic community.

At the same time, an opportunity emerged to apply for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons IDEA Grant, providing both momentum and validation for an idea that had already begun to take root. As trainees and mentors immersed in orthopaedics, and as avid listeners of podcasts and participants in online forums, we noticed what was missing. Despite the abundance of academic resources, there was no dedicated space for women in orthopaedics to speak openly about the realities that exist beyond the operating room: family planning, career longevity, identity, and balance. In a specialty where women remain markedly underrepresented, these conversations were happening in isolation, if they were happening at all.

After being awarded $14,000 through the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons IDEA Grant and speaking with women across the US, we realized that others shared our same longing for connection, guidance, and honest dialogue. With that support, YourMedMom evolved from an idea into a platform, one intentionally built to foster community, normalize shared challenges, and provide a space where women in orthopaedics can learn from one another and feel supported at every stage of their careers.
